Peripheral Nervous System

What is the peripheral nervous system?

Image7. Peripheral Nervous System

The role of peripheral nervous system is to relay information between the CNS and the rest of the body (i.e. limbs and organs). It is NOT protected by bone, meninges or CSF, so it is exposed to infections, toxins etc.

The peripheral nervous system is divided into the motor (efferent) and sensory (afferent).

The sensory system conducts information from receptors to the brain

The motor system conducts information from the brain to effectors i.e. muscles and glands
